CMJ 560 - Media Psychology

Have you considered why people choose to watch sad movies? Or how racial stereotypes in the media affect our perception of others? Throughout the semester we will read a survey of media psychology research and engage in seminar-style discussions. Sample topics include media and emotion, media and stereotyping, parasocial relationships, information processing, and narrative persuasion. The course will begin with an introduction to social science methods/study design to provide a foundation for understanding the statistics and methods used in the journal manuscripts. We will work on a class research project throughout the semester, providing a hands-on introduction to statistics and SPSS using actual data. No prior statistical knowledge is required to take the course.
