MES 540 - Maine and the Northeast Borderlands This interdisciplinary course examines Maine, Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces as borderlands regions that share both cultural and natural characteristics. Introduces students to the concept of borderlands as used in literature, history, economics, public policy, anthropology, and political science. Explores differences and commonalities, conflict and consensus among peoples living in the borderlands. Examines how the meaning of the border and its permeability have changed over time. Considers how governmental and non-governmental agencies regulate natural resources as well as the movement of people and trade in the border region.
