President’s Message

As the state’s center for research and graduate education, the University of Maine offers distinctive opportunities. We have a statewide mission as Maine’s land and sea grant institution, providing leadership in teaching, research, scholarship and economic development, and community engagement that affirms our commitment to education that has the power to markedly change and improve lives.

At the University of Maine, we are dedicated to empowering our more than 11,200 undergraduate and graduate students to make a difference in the world around them through active learning and impactful service. Our students come from across Maine, the United States and more than 65 countries. UMaine graduate students collaborate with nationally and internationally recognized faculty, researchers and scholars, and contribute to the quality of the academic experience by mentoring undergraduates. Our graduate students excel as they conduct research around the world and on campus in UMaine’s outstanding facilities, in partnerships with such world-class institutions as The Jackson Laboratory, and in the natural resource-rich setting of Maine and the region.

The University of Maine, the state’s primary Ph.D.-granting institution, offers doctoral degrees in 35 fields, representing the humanities, sciences, engineering and education; and master’s degrees in 70 disciplines. UMaine is ranked among the National Science Foundation’s top research universities and has been recognized with the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

We look forward to your contributions to UMaine’s legacy of graduate education, which began with the conferral of the first master’s degree in 1881. Welcome to the University of Maine community.
