President’s Message

Welcome to the University of Maine Graduate School catalog website.

Graduate education has been a University of Maine hallmark for virtually all of the institution’s history. In the 21st century, our graduate programs distinctly represent the university’s commitment to its unique and invaluable statewide land-grant mission. Graduate teaching and research, with the associated meaningful public engagement, set UMaine apart in important ways as it fulfills that mission while advancing research and economic development. Above all, graduate programs enhance the academic life of our university by bringing remarkable people – faculty, students and staff alike – into our community.

That academic community features Maine’s most accomplished community of scholars, the University of Maine faculty. A great many of our professors are among the world’s leading experts in their disciplines, across a broad range of academic areas including the arts and humanities, science, engineering, social sciences and professional studies. They endeavor to provide our students with the high-quality experience, and associated rigor, they rightfully expect from a university with an international reputation for excellence. Our professors are as engaged as they are accomplished, and we are proud of their scholarly work in all its forms. It is that commitment to engagement with their students as mentors that enables the University of Maine to offer high quality graduate education preparing our graduate students for success as scholars themselves.

The University of Maine is a vibrant community, with a comprehensive range of services and activities intended to support our students as they pursue their academic goals, while supplementing the classroom experience through access to the social and entertainment opportunities that complete the graduate school experience.

UMaine’s distinctiveness is marked – to a significant degree – by the accomplishments of its graduate students and the alumni from its graduate programs. We are glad that you are part of our university community, and we look forward to supporting you in the pursuit of your academic and personal goals.

With best personal regards,

Paul W. Ferguson
